  • MIT has a well established system of external feedback for its various units. This is through the existence of external "Visiting Committees". These committees are composed of individuals who care about MIT. These include members of the MIT Corporation, alumni of MIT and other external national experts. These committees, usually about 15 people strong, gather every eighteen months to two years to examine a unit. Visiting Committees play three major roles:

    • They provide an external perspective on the needs and issues of the unit for the senior administration (they report to the President and Corporation).
    • They can, on occasion, articulate the needs of the unit.
    • They can provide external insights to force internal change in a unit.

    The DUE Visiting Committee is scheduled to visit us on March 16-17. They will expect to hear what we have accomplished since 2008, in terms of their last set of recommendations. The following two article provide an overview of the 2008 Committee findings and DUE's Response:

    In addition to reviewing accomplishments, they will also expect us to discuss the current issues we are facing and to put these issues into a national context. The DUE leadership team will cover three topics in discussion sessions with the committee:

    • Technology-Enabled Change
    • Empowering Student Learning
    • What DUE Can Catalyze and Implications for DUE for the Future

    The insights of these national experts are very valuable to DUE and we are looking forward to their visit.

  • MIT is ranked eighth on The Princeton Review’s 2010 list of the nation's “Best Value” private colleges and universities.

    “The Princeton Review Best Value Colleges for 2010” list, unveiled on Tuesday, Jan. 12, features 50 public and 50 private colleges and universities. Of the 50 schools in each category, the top 10 are ranked individually and the remaining 40 are listed in alphabetical order and unranked.

    In an online profile of MIT, the editors at The Princeton Review commended the Institute for its admissions and generous aid policies.

  • The Global Education and Career Development Center (GECDC) will be offering over 30 IAP programs this year. The successful pursuit of a job, internship, advanced degree, or global opportunity begins with:

    • investigating your options
    • assessing your skills and
    • pursuing your goals.
  • On Dec. 23, MIT Chancellor Phillip Clay announced that Student Support Services (S^3) will now report to the Office of the Dean for Undergraduate Education (DUE). This administrative change was based on careful consideration of the November 2009 final report of the Student Support Services (S^3) Task Force.

  • This year, the Terrascope program offered a unique challenge to a group of more than 50 freshmen in Mission 2013, or 12.000. Their task, which was to propose a global solution to the rapid rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide using Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS), was by no means an easy one. In the past, Terrascope has asked freshmen to study a variety of complex problems including the destruction of the Amazon rain forest, reconstruction of post-Katrina New Orleans, collapse of the global fishery, and the lack of fresh water in western North America.

  • ESG Students at Ed Tech FairOn October 14, the Office of Educational Innovation and Technology, the Teaching and Learning Laboratory, and the Office of Faculty Support co-hosted the MIT Ed Tech Fair 2009: Innovation, Transformation and Excellence in Learning. The four-hour passion-filled event enjoyed a huge turnout, with a lively panel discussion featuring four MIT professors doing pioneering work in visualization and simulation, the student winners of the iCampus prize demonstrating their winning projects and over 25 presenters and exhibitors.

  • I recently visited with the 29 students we currently have at Cambridge University this year as part of the Cambridge MIT Exchange. They are excited to be there and learning in a different environment. We spoke about the differences between MIT and Cambridge University. While many of them appreciate Cambridge, they are also seeing more clearly the structure of an MIT education and the skills we are giving them.
