GECD Employer Symposium

Nora Delaney, Staff Writer and Advisor, GECD

GECD’s second annual Employer Symposium hosted 50 employers this year from a range of industries. This all-day event complements the MIT Spring Career Fair, giving employers a chance to learn more about our students.

GECD Employer SymposiumThe symposium provides employers with insight into the challenges experienced by students balancing academics with interviewing; guidance on how employers can effectively brand their companies and recruit students; an understanding of students, the academic environment, and the overall culture of MIT; and discussion of site-visit timing, accelerated hiring programs, and recruiting policies and deadlines.

Held in the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory, the program opened with welcome remarks from Dean for Undergraduate Education Dennis Freeman, followed by keynote addresses from Dean of Admissions Stuart Schmill and GECD Executive Director Melanie Parker.

The day also included a panel on MIT’s Experiential Learning Programs; focus-group feedback on what students want from recruiting; a networking lunch with MIT staff, faculty, and administrators; and a panel on how companies can build their brands at MIT.

After closing remarks by Director of Career Services Deborah Liverman, employers had the opportunity to tour MIT labs, including CSAIL and the Media Lab.
