New Ways to Reach Sophomores

SYE Opportunties FairIn this, it’s second year, Sophomore Year Experience (SYE) is trying out some new ways to reach second-year students. SYE is an initiative expanding on the work of the Sophomore Year Transition Program in the Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Programming (UAAP).

The academic year began with the second annual SYE Opportunities Fair, this year cosponsored with UPOP and Gordon Engineering Leadership Program. Thirty offices and programs were available to talk to sophomores about potential experiences at MIT and beyond. SYE also launched the @mitsophomores twitter feed to help sophomores stay on top of important dates and deadlines for relevant programs and events that align with SYE’s goals:

  • Increase sophomores’ awareness of resources for academic and personal planning and growth.
  • Foster strong personal and class identity for sophomores.
  • Help sophomores make informed and thoughtful decisions about their future.
  • Create purposeful transitions to and from the sophomore year.
  • Help sophomores further develop relationships with faculty, staff, advisors and peers.

Other plans for the year include a series topical lunches and an SYE blog, featuring second year students recruited to chronicle their own sophomore year experience.
