MIT Employer Symposium

Faith C. Giordano, Career Assistant, Employer Relations GECD

We are pleased to report that the first annual MIT Employer Symposium was a succes. Held on April 3, 2013 at the MIT Faculty Club, this event brought seventy representatives from fifty employers together with MIT staff, students, and administrators to learn about best practices for recruiting MIT students.

Executive Director of Global Education Melanie Parker and Chancellor Eric Grimson opened the event with keynote addresses about the GECD office and MIT culture. A panel of MIT administrators and staff, moderated by Assistant Director of Employer Relations Alessandra Christensen, spoke about various aspects of the MIT student experience and special student populations. Universum Vice President of Advisory Services, John Flato, gave a presentation about employer branding, and after a networking lunch, Katie Pfledderer from DirectEmployers talked about the use of social media in recruiting.

The highlight of the event for many attendees was a student panel, moderated by Associate Director of Employer Relations, Tamara Menghi, where employers had the opportunity to hear honest student opinions about company presentations, marketing, internships, and job postings. The student panelists were Adaeze Ezeh ‘13, Erin Bailie ‘15, Jordan Haines ’15, Jacob Jurewicz ’13, and Sean Batir ’15. Deborah Liverman, the Director of Career Services, closed the event with some final tips for recruiting at MIT.

We are currently collecting feedback from employers; as a result of the survey results so far, we are planning an expanded event with more time for networking and a larger student panel.
