Career Development Goes Global

Colin Smith, Career Development Specialist, GECD: Career Services

Colin in CambridgeFrom November 26th- December 9th, Career Development Specialist Colin Smith of MIT’s Global Education and Career Development traveled to the United Kingdom as part of an ongoing exchange program with the career offices of the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London. Colin is the second GECD staff member to participate in the exchange and follows Assistant Director for Career Counseling, Marilyn Wilson who participated in 2010.

The first part of Colin’s exchange was spent at the University of Cambridge Careers Service. In addition to being able to shadow a variety of meetings and student appointments, Colin met with a number of students interested in coming to the United States. One alum of MIT he met with for a resume critique at Cambridge, recently accepted a post doctoral research position at IBM in New York.

The second half of Colin’s exchange was spent at Imperial College London. Shadowing counseling staff at this science and engineering-focused institution afforded Colin the opportunity to see the similarities and differences between services provided and the issues faced by an institution with a mission and student body very similar to MIT’s.

Last year, following Marilyn Wilson’s return some new programming initiatives were implemented within GECD. This year, Colin intends to pilot small group workshops for students interested in skill at case interviewing. GECD is looking forward to returning the favor of the exchange when it hosts staff from the UK in what is hoped to be the near future.
