Janet RankinTeaching and Learning Laboratory staff members have traveled throughout the world this year, giving presentations on MIT’s efforts in STEM education and leading workshops in teaching and learning for faculty at universities with whom MIT collaborates.

In September, Janet Rankin, Associate Director for Teaching Initiatives, led a workshop for Portuguese faculty from the MIT Portugal Program’s Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing (EDAM) area. The daylong workshop, entitled “Improving Student Learning and Knowledge Retention,” was attended by 27 faculty members from three different universities.

In November, Lori Breslow, TLL Director, gave two presentations at the Global Human Resources Forum, a gathering of 3,000 academic and corporate leaders in Seoul, South Korea. Lori gave two presentations. The first was to a general audience on “Improving Teaching by Focusing on Learning.” The second, on leadership, was for Korean high school and college students who were winners of the Korea Young Talent Awards.

Besides giving a workshop on teaching, they also met with each faculty member to talk about issues related to his or her teaching. In some cases, faculty members were videotaped teaching a class, and Janet and Lori reviewed the videotape.

Closer to home, Sanjoy Mahajan, Associate Director for Teaching Initiatives, was on seven panels at the Annual Conference on World Affairs in Boulder, Colorado.

Over the past years, TLL staff members have led teaching and learning workshops in Cape Town, South Africa and Reykjavik, Iceland, and given workshops in Cambridge for faculty from Chile, Taiwan, and Panama, as well as other countries. Visitors from over two dozen countries have come to meet with TLL staff to hear about teaching and learning initiatives at MIT.
