OME Leadership Development Workshop Series Wraps Up 2nd Year

By Lisa Mullan Strack, Academic Programs Coordinator, Office of Minority Education

The Leadership Development Workshop Series is designed to support student leaders as they balance managing their organizations as well as excel academically. In September, 57 students attended the second annual Leadership Development Retreat at Endicott House. Following the retreat, the OME sponsored five monthly workshops for the executive board members of the OME Student Advisory Council’s organizations. Led by MIT staff, alumni, and students, the workshops explored topics ranging from budgeting and fundraising to recruitment and succession planning. Fifty students participated in the workshops, with 26 students attending two or more.

A special dinner on May 8th recognized the achievements of the student leaders and workshop presenters. The festivities included reflection on the year and the qualities of leadership. Dean Karl Reid offered inspirational closing remarks about the power of student leadership at MIT.

Plans are underway for the 2008-2009 workshops. If you are interested in leading a workshop, please contact Lisa Mullan Strack at
