Global Theme Update

By Elizabeth Reed, Senior Associate Dean

Effective January 1, 2008, Melanie Parker, Executive Director of the MIT Careers Office (MITCO) will lead the Global Theme. This is particularly advantageous since MITCO’s Office of Foreign Study and Prestigious Fellowships will likely be a “hub” of expanded support for student global opportunities as well as for faculty involved with global exchanges.

Melanie succeeds Kim Vandiver who has led the global team since its formation. Under Kim’s leadership, the team completed its work in November with the development of a response to recommendations of GEOMIT: the Global Educational Opportunities at MIT Committee. Dan Hastings established and charged GEOMIT with defining the best approach to providing global opportunities in MIT undergraduate education. One of the committee’s recommendations is for a new Faculty Advisory Committee on Global Educational Opportunities to provide faculty oversight of global education policies. Kim will chair this committee. A 2008 DUE Newsletter will include a summary of the GEOMIT report and the DUE response, as well as an update on future directions and membership of the global team.
